Investigation: Lizzie Borden House (Fall River, Mass)

Date: May 10th, 2008

History:  Erected in 1845, the home was originally a two family and was later made into a single
family by Andrew J. Borden. Andrew J. Borden bought the house at 92 Second Street to be close
to his bank and various downtown businesses. The Bed & Breakfast is named after Andrew J.
Borden’s youngest daughter, Lizzie. August 4, 1892. A wealthy businessman and his wife are
found brutally murdered in their Victorian home in Fall River, Massachusetts. The Accused: the
youngest daughter, Lizzie. The Verdict: Not Guilty! So goes the lore of the most famous crime in
the annals of American history. The mystery remains: If Lizzie Borden did not wield the murder
weapon, who did? Although she was tried and acquitted of the crimes she was ostracized by the
community of Fall River. Since the murders on August 4, 1892 the house has been a private
residence. Now for the first time the public is allowed not only to view the murder scene, but is
given an opportunity to spend a night (if you dare) in the actual house where the murders took
place.

Claims: The night manager claims to have felt a hand on her shoulder when she walked by the
sofa he was killed on in the parlor. The basement of the B&B is haunted, says the owner - who
incidentally grew up in the house. She claims to have seen a floating apparition of a woman in
Victorian dress near the laundry room in the basement. When she was a child, she claims that she
witnessed a window open and shut repeatedly before her eyes, "banging, up and down, up and
down". Along with many other claims from many guest and caretakers there. Lizzie is buried next
to her father and stepmother in the town cemetery.

Personal Experiences (Investigators): We had an awesome time at the Lizzie Borden
House! Kat and I met up with the incredible hosts from Nightwatchers and Matt Moniz from
Spooky Southcoast. We also had the chance to meet some of the members of Ghost Hunters
International, as well as members from many other groups from all over the country. Also all of the
people from the Lizzie Borden House were beyond generous. The house was beautiful and it was
an unbelievable experience. Due to the number of people who attended, we weren't able to come
up with any real good evidence but it was a great opportunity. We learned a lot from the other
groups about investigating, equipment, and experiences. Kat and I had the chance to investigate
all of the rooms on all three floors, and the basement. With more than 18 people in the house it
was a little difficult to record but it was great to just have free roam. We went up to the third floor
last, it was one of those areas that you only felt safe standing with your back against a wall, so you
could be sure that no one was behind you. It was definitely creepy up there. Although we didn't
have any specific experiences up there, I wouldn't want to sleep there alone! We wrapped things
up around 3:30am and went to sleep in the same room that Lizzie's mother was found. Although
the idea could possibly keep me awake, I was too tired to be afraid and slept like a champ. It was
a great night.
